Why do you want to become a Board member of the Bow Valley Chamber of Commerce?

The Bow Valley Chamber of Commerce is at a critical time in its history and requires careful stewardship in order to successfully transition from its founding board to its first elected board and beyond. I have extensive board experience through my political background, was the Chair of the Human Resources Committee with the Calgary Chamber of Commerce and worked as the Government Relations Manager with the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce. I have also held executive positions with the Retail Council of Canada and Merit Contractors Association - both organizations are member based not-for-profit associations, similar to the Bow Valley Chamber. I believe that my long history and extensive experience with boards and not-for-profit associations will be an asset to the Bow Valley Chamber as it transitions to a member elected board now and into the future. For the first time in my career, I am not serving my community in a volunteer capacity (my wife and I had twins 18 months ago, so I took a step back from all volunteer positions) and I feel that the time is right to step up and serve once again.

Executive MBA with a Finance Specialization from the University of Calgary in May 2016 and this degree provided me with financial acumen, which I now use on my two communications businesses. I have also served as Treasurer for two political boards in the past.

I also served as the Human Resource Chair for the Calgary Chamber of Commerce and for a couple years I led an Alberta industry stakeholder group called the Coalition for Action on Labour Shortages, which consisted of representatives from 24 industry associations and Chamber of Commerce in Calgary and Alberta. I run two communications and marketing companies with my wife and we specialize in public relations and digital communications. We work with clients across western Canada in a variety of sectors. I have worked in the communications, public relations and stakeholder relations field my entire career and have extensive knowledge and experience in this area.

I volunteered for the Bow Valley Chamber Business Excellence Awards, providing communications and graphic design support through my company, CIPR Communications. Through this engagement, I assisted with around 40 hours of support to the Chamber.

Why do you want to become a Board member of the Bow Valley Chamber of Commerce?

It`s time for me to step up and give back to Canmore and being on the Board for the Bow Valley Chamber of Commerce feels like a perfect fit for me. As a Canmore business owner of Tapas Restaurant for 11 years and a business coach based in Canmore. I truly enjoy engaging with other business owners and learning about how they conduct business in the Bow Valley.

Having run my own successful bookkeeping business in town, I am familiar with many businesses - the issues they face and the successes they have. I have a great reputation as the owner of Tapas Restaurant but I do tend to work behind the scenes so I would like to put myself out into the community more.

I am also expanding my business coaching practice and look forward to adding a successful board position to my resume. With involvement with theChamber of Commerce, I plan to offer Learn and Lunch and workshops for the Members. and those living in the Bow Valley to help them with their growing businesses. Being a business owner, business coach and business college instructor, I feel I have the right background to keep the Chamber of Commerce moving forward and in the right direction.

Please detail your experience in the areas of Community Involvement, Leadership, Marketing, Communication and Business Planning

Community Involvement - Presently volunteer for sporting events in Canmore and give donations from Tapas; in the past, I was part of Soroptimist and United Way when I worked for Suncor in Calgary.

Leadership - As owner of Tapas, I work with my management team to help them become the leaders of Tapas; I am a trained teacher and have shown my leadership skills both inside and outside of the classroom.

Marketing - Being a business coach, we help our clients find ways to perform their marketing and most importantly, we coach the value of testing and measuring their marketing strategies.

Communication - I am an online business instructor for Bow Valley College and have been teaching business communication to students for the last 10 years. I feel my communication is strong and to the point - I like to get business done.

Business Planning - As an owner of a few businesses and a business coach, this is a strong area for me. I ran my own bookkeeping company in town for the last 8 years for ten different businesses in town and gave up most of my clients to become a business coach. I enjoy business planning - working with budgets and financial statements are both skills I am familiar with.

Why do you want to become a Board member of the Bow Valley Chamber of Commerce?

I am a long-time business owner and am passionate about business and our community. I see great value in the success of a Chamber of Commerce in our community and know that I have a lot to contribute to being a board member. I am in a great position to be able to contribute to the board right now and have had previous experience as a board member and Chair of the Westboro Business Improvement Association in Ottawa. I have the background and knowledge to make a significant contribution on the board and to support the continuing growth of the newly established Bow Valley Chamber of Commerce.

I have always been a team player and see incredible value in working collaboratively to support the growth of the Bow Valley Chamber of Commerce. I have been involved in many community initiatives throughout my life and career. I have worked in a community setting and have also been involved in a number of community projects and events. My role has always been leadership oriented as I naturally migrate to this role. As a business owner for many years I have considerable experience in marketing, communication, public relations, public speaking and all aspects of business from strategy to implementation.

Why do you want to become a Board member of the Bow Valley Chamber of Commerce?

My background in business has been in bringing people from different backgrounds to work together and collaborate on different issues. We create and involved in many community events in the Bow Valley and Calgary and have a pulse on the community. I would like to focus on growing the Chamber in the Bow Valley with a focus on introducing and growing it`s presence in Banff. The more members the chamber has the better it can represent everyone`s interests. As a young Chamber there are many ways that we can craft and design the chamber in a way that serves us, it`s members well.

I attended Asper School of Business at the University of Manitoba prior to pursuing Sciences. I was a Store Manager at Starbucks leading the community programs for Winnipeg. I spent 7 years as a District Manager for Starbucks in Calgary, Canmore and Banff and was the District Financial Lead. I left Starbucks as an Interim Regional Director to join Apple Inc. as a Senior Manager and New Store Opening Mentor (opening stores and living in China for 6 months).

Through my time at Apple we have volunteered for the Calgary Drop-In Centre (helping people with financial literacy skills), Beakerhead (helping kids see the value of science in Education), Calgary Immigrant Educational Society (helping with resume and interviewing skills for new immigrants), 1% for the Planet (1% of revenue to CPAWS) and Alpine Club of Canada (SkimoCanada) through weekly volunteering getting people into the backcountry. In addition I am spending my time creating community events for local skiers and runners in the Bow Valley as a Co-Founder of SkiUphill Inc.
